Cubs almost certainly have this forgotten reliever in their 2026 plans

When it comes to the "big" moves the Chicago Cubs made this offseason, it's easy to forget that relief pitcher Eli Morgan was once considered an exciting piece to a badly needed bullpen revamp. A poor performance to start the season, followed by an injury that's kept him on the shelf since the spring, will do that. However, there's one big reason why Jed Hoyer and Co. should consider bringing him back in 2025.

While the Cubs' trade acquisition has been a massive disappointment in 2025, the team always needs to keep an eye on 2026. Because the former Cleveland reliever managed to keep his option for next season, he suddenly becomes more valuable as a wild-card roster piece.

How roster flexibility makes Eli Morgan a valuable wild card for the Chicago Cubs

Morgan, who is currently languishing in the Chicago Cubs' farm system on a prolonged rehab assignment that will almost certainly end the season in the minor leagues, has managed to keep his status on a level where he could be someone who, even if he makes a big league club in 2026, could be shuttled back and forth to Triple-A.

In a league where relievers are pitching more innings than ever and where teams are constantly searching for fresh arms, Eli Morgan's progress on his rehab and starting to return to form suddenly becomes more attractive. Even if he's never going to be the pitcher the Cubs thought they were getting.

In five games since getting bumped up to Iowa at the end of August, Morgan has posted a 1.35 earned run average and struck out nine batters in 6 2/3 innings. He hasn't been perfect, as he's also allowed eight baserunners, but he's showing something.

He's especially showing something for a Chicago Cubs team that will need some relievers who will be given a chance at the big league level, but can also be shuttled down to the minors if he struggles or they need to rotate in fresher arms. Fans might not love to hear it, but Eli Morgan should be in the club's plans for 2026.
