Cubs have their All-Star dream come true for Wrigley Field (But there's a catch)

The Chicago Cubs will finally be hosting an All-Star Game at Wrigley Field.

Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reported on Thursday afternoon that the Cubs will be hosting the 2027 All-Star game. Levine noted that an official announcement will be coming from Major League Baseball later this summer.

Wrigley Field to host 2027 All-Star game

After the restoration project between 2014 and 2019, the Cubs' biggest goal for Wrigley Field was to host an All-Star game. As Levine noted, one of the final hurdles the Cubs had to clear was adding additional security around Wrigley Field. The Cubs added that security this season.

Now, there is a major catch that could derail the Cubs' dreams actually coming true. Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement is set to expire after the 2026. Every indication has been that there won't just be a lockout, but the 2027 season is already in jeopardy. Perhaps, the biggest talking point for the next CBA agreement is the luxury tax.

Owners like Tom Ricketts have made it very clear that they aren't aligned with the Wild Wild West spending of teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. Furthermore, the question about deferred money in contracts is also expected to be included in that conversation.

In other words, the stage is already set for the 2027 season to be shortened, if not canceled entirely. As of now, it's unclear what that would mean for the Cubs' hosting the All-Star game. The idea of the Cubs hosting the 2026 All-Star Game can already be discarded. Major League Baseball likes to announce the host site two years ahead of time. The 2026 Midsummer Classic will be held at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

It could be the Cubs and Major League Baseball follow the precedent set in 2020. The Dodgers were set to host the 2020 All-Star Game but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plans were scrapped. The Dodgers went on to host the 2022 All-Star game.
