The 2025 MLB Draft is nearly upon us and the Chicago Cubs will look to continue their recent streak of hot picks in the first round. Jed Hoyer has hit on his last three first-round selections, taking the likes of Cade Horton (2022), Matt Shaw (2023) and Cam Smith (2024).

Horton and Shaw are both playing key roles as rookies for the first-place Cubs and, although Shaw has left much to be desired at the plate, the general consensus seems to be he'll figure it out and be the same quality bat he was his entire college and minor league career. And it's safe to say his glovework at third has been more than average, shoring up an area of concern on the roster.

As for Smith, he was a coveted piece that went back to the Houston Astros in the Kyle Tucker trade last winter - and he's settling in nicely at the big-league level as an above-average contributor for manager Joe Espada.

So let's take a look at when the Cubs will be picking in this year's MLB Draft - and some names to keep an eye on.

Complete list of the Chicago Cubs' 2025 MLB Draft picks

  • No. 17, First Round
  • No. 56, Second Round
  • No. 90, Third Round
  • No. 121, Fourth Round
  • No. 151, Fifth Round
  • Round 6-20, the Cubs will have the 16th selection in each round

This year's draft could end up being especially important for the organization long-term, with trade rumors swirling around a number of their high-level prospects at Triple-A, including Kevin Alcantara, Owen Caissie and others.

Rumblings suggest Hoyer will look to deal from that high-level surplus to avoid pillaging the lower levels, where long-term talent is still developing. Reinforcing the farm system with another first-round win would be another feather in the Cubs' president of baseball ops' cap as his popularity has done a complete 180 from where it was last fall, thanks to a surging team heading into the All-Star break in position to claim a playoff spot.

Some names to keep an eye on in the first round include Arkansas infielder and 2025 Golden Spikes Award winner Wehiwa Aloy and Razorbacks teammate Gage Wood. You can follow all our coverage of this year's MLB Draft, which takes place on July 13-14 in Atlanta as part of All-Star Week.
