Cardinals' Masyn Winn drops brutal trade deadline quote ahead of game v. Cubs

For much of the season, the St. Louis Cardinals defied the odds - and even after going 2-8 in their last 10, they're still on the edges of the wild-card race in the National League. Have they been good enough to change the plans of Chaim Bloom, who replaced longtime exec John Mozeliak last offseason?

Definitely not. At least, not if you ask Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn, who dropped a heater of a quote when speaking with the media during this week's series against the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium.

"We could win every game for the rest of the year, and [Chaim Bloom] would still trade guys."

Masyn Winn is expecting the Cardinals to sell. His fellow young veteran leaders are somewhat more circumspect. They all agree they share responsibility in how the post-deadline looks:

I mean, he's not wrong. Bloom was brought in to bring back the annoying consistency the Redbirds embodied for much of the last three decades before falling on hard times in recent years. He's not going to let a decent first half overshadow the fact this roster is deeply flawed and far from being a legitimate contender.

Dustin May and Ryne Stanek are among the names already being tossed around - and there could be a larger sell-off at hand, as well, depending on how far Bloom wants to go. As our friends at Redbird Rants point out, guys like Ivan Herrera, Alex Burleson, Lars Nootbaar, Kyle Leahy and Andre Pallante could also be shopped.

Could the Cardinals be a dark-horse Cubs trade deadline partner?

As much as I'd love to bring in someone like Pallante or Leahy, there are no indications the Cubs and Cardinals are talking about coming together on a trade. Dustin May has been all over the place this year, but could draw interest as a depth piece for teams in need of arms. Yes, Jed Hoyer is looking for arms, but I don't think he's going to get one from St. Louis.

That being said, if the Cardinals do end up selling, that could deepen the pool of pitchers available on the trade market - which might help Hoyer tackle the one job he's got ahead of Aug. 3: reinforce a staff that's battled and ground its way through injury after injury. So, while at first glance, this comment may not mean much to Cubs fans - it's worth taking note of.
