Cardinals manager just got humiliated—and Cubs fans love it

Each year, Major League Baseball players are polled on various topics impacting the game, and the results are shared with The Athletic. Among the topics this year was the review of managers, and to no surprise of Chicago Cubs fans, Craig Counsell got high remarks.

Of the 121 respondents, Counsell finished as the fourth-most popular manager among players. Terry Francona of the Cincinnati Reds and Bruce Bochy of the Texas Rangers being the most popular isn't all that surprising given their respective Hall of Fame managerial careers. The gap between Counsell and those two is, to a surprise, Cleveland Guardians' manager Steven Vogt.

While Counsell is a manager whom players want to play for, St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol was tied with Bud Black for being the manager that players least want to play for. Black has since been fired by the Rockies, but for Marmol, the poor reviews add a level of hilarity when you look at what was said about the Cardinals' manager.

“I don’t really know many managers. I’m trying to think of someone in our division, just so I can say someone. Who is the Cardinals’ guy? … Yeah. Just put him down," one respondent told The Athletic

Cubs fans can enjoy Oliver Marmol's humiliation

The fact that the despondent couldn't even remember Marmol's name just speaks to how forgettable he is as a manager. Of course, that particular response was from someone within the NL Central, so there likely was some division rivalry at play with that answer.

However, Cardinals fans likely aren't disagreeing with Marmol's ranking this week. The Cardinals have lost three games in a row, and in doing so, Marmol's choices have drawn the ire of the St. Louis fanbase.

It would seem that the Cardinals will need to make a decision on Marmol's future after this season. Marmol's current contract runs through the 2026 season. Wanting to avoid having a manager with a lame-duck status, Marmol could be on the hot seat if the Cardinals don't find a way into the postseason in October. With the front office's restructuring taking effect this winter, it stands to reason that there could be a new manager in place.
