We're having a great time watching this.

After the Chicago Cubs were swept by the San Diego Padres in the National League Wild Card series, it was hard to be too surprised. The Padres were one of the hottest teams in baseball, and with below .500 record in September, the Cubs stumbled into the playoffs. No rematch for the Cubs against the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS, but there might have been hope among fans that the Padres could do what the Cubs couldn't last October.

Yes, it's somewhat lame to be rooting for another team to do what the Cubs have been allergic to, but the idea of Milwaukee being a phenomenal regular-season team only to melt in the playoffs is something that Cubs fans have been able to hold onto over the past five years.

Brewers' hot start against Padres could make Cubs fans forget one longstanding Milwaukee clapback

That may not be the case this October. After winning the first two games of the NLDS against the Padres, it would seem that the Brewers are positioned to reach the NLCS. The scary reality is that of any team remaining in the National League, the Brewers look like the best option to reach the Padres.

First, the Padres. Fact is that San Diego benefited from being at home in the Wild Card series, and it was clear that the Cubs ran out of gas. San Diego is probably closer to the team that was barely at the .500 mark at the deadline, then they are the team that took advantage of a hot September to secure the top Wild Card spot. As much as it sting to say this, the Brewers are a great team, and capable of exposing inferior teams.

Then, there's the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers and Braves flirted with being the best team in the National League at various points of the regular season, but neither should be viewed as the favorite in a NLCS against the Brewers. The Dodgers have been leaking oil since the trade deadline, and there are legitimate questions about the team's offense. The Braves' offense has been inconsistent, but they also may not have the pitching stability to keep up with the Brewers.

Sure, there will be the question of winning it if the Brewers reached the World Series, but it feels like the one thign Cubs fans could over Milwaukee is coming to an end. We could be wrong, and would love to be wrong, but that is what the first weekend of the NLDS told us.

If that happens, then the task in front of the Cubs will only get more daunting. Perhaps, it already is, but the Brewers adding a World Series appearance would just further represent that they are everything the Cubs have failed to be under Jed Hoyer.
