While any of the three would be an upgrade, Jansen would be the best addition

When viewing the three through the specific prism of the Cubs' needs it becomes clear that offensive production is the most important factor. Catcher is the only position that is easily upgradeable on the free-agent market that fits within the team's' economic plans.

While he's coming off a down year with the bat, Jansen has the best track record of being a plus offensive player. Unlike Higashioka, he is more than a one-trick pony in the batter's box, further adding to his appeal.

Defensively, he might not be as good as Kelly, but he still stands a chance of being an upgrade over Amaya, and if his framing reverts back to 2023 levels, he should be able to turn in an average performance with the glove further aiding his appeal.

With a contract projection of two years for $8.87 million, Jansen should easily fit into Chicago's budget while still giving them room to chase starting pitching help. Jed Hoyer and company would be well-served making that deal sooner rather than later as Cubs fans are getting impatient, hoping the team isn't on track for another mediocre season in 2025.
