Chicago Cubs fans aren't doing so well after the Cubs were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers to open the season in Japan.
After losing the games to the Dodgers on Tuesday and Wednesday, Cubs fans will be left in their feels until the team has their stateside Opening Day against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 27. As the fanbase sulks, they may also take issue with what Alex Bregman revealed about his free-agent process.
Bregman dominated Cubs rumors at the end of the offseason, with the impression being that the North Siders were making a strong push to sign the All-Star third baseman. As it turns, the Cubs made a strong push in relation to their normal pursuits of free-agent targets but their efforts to sign Bregman, on the national level, made it seem that a deal between the two sides was never all that realistic.
Bregman may have confirmed that fact while speaking on Foul Territory, In detailing the final days prior to his signing with the Boston Red Sox, Bregman revealed that he was headed tot he Detroit Tigers before the Red Sox upped their offer unexpectedly.
Alex Bregman thought he was going to Detroit until the Red Sox swooped in at the last minute.

The Cubs never quite got close in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes
It's a fitting revelation for Cubs fans after they spent the past two mornings watching the Dodgers, the team who currently spares no expense in pursuing their top targets. Meanwhile, under Tom Ricketts with Jed Hoyer as his front man, the Cubs have become obsessed with making sure they do no lose the deal they are making.
As long as that is the reality the Cubs' front office is living, the process that played out for Bregman will be the Cubs' way. The Cubs are the little engine that couldn't when it comes to free agency. In doing so, the Cubs are going to electively shy away from spending at the top of the market, and in doing so, despite rumors of interest, will routinely miss on their targets because they are more concerned about the margins instead of being great. By the way, the Dodgers looked pretty good on the margins as they were sweeping the Cubs to open the 2025 MLB season.
