Now that the 2026 season has come to an end for the Chicago Cubs, they are in a bit of a waiting game. They didn't quite reach the World Series, and there is some real reflection needed from Jed Hoyer and the front office in terms of the best path forward.

Of course, this may not be a typical offseason. The current CBA expires on December 1, and the expectation is that things will be pretty chaotic during the month of November. While past years have seen very little activity, the expectation is that as soon as the World Series is over, executives will be eager to get moves done before they wait to find out the new rules to play by.

Jed Hoyer should have these teams on speed dial if the Cubs want to get work done before the MLB lockout

Many times, early deals of the offseason are a continuation from talks that were had during the season. For example, last offseason, the Cubs traded for Edward Cabrera after being connected to the Miami Marlins in trade talks for the past year.

Los Angeles Angels

The one that got away from the Cubs at the trade deadline was Reid Detmers. The Angels made noise near the end of the regular season, considering the news of Stan Kroenke purchasing the team from Arte Moreno. Assuming John Mozeliak stays in place, chances are the Cubs revisit those trade talks early in the offseason.

Minnesota Twins

Pitching will be the topic of conversation for the Cubs during the offseason. Assuming Hoyer doesn't want to pay Tarik Skubal, if he wants to add a top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher, it will need to be through the trade market. A free agent after the 2027 season, perhaps the Twins cut their losses with Joe Ryan early, considering the chance that some of the regular season is lost. His value will not be any higher than it is at the start of the offseason, and the Cubs should certainly be willing to convince the Twins to make a deal.

Seattle Mariners

The Cubs were connected to the Seattle Mariners at the deadline, considering rumors that George Kirby and Emerson Hancock were available. As was the case with Cabrera, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Cubs revisit these trade talks, especially since they will need to replace most of their starting rotation.

San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants opted to hold onto Logan Webb at the trade deadline, but that won't stop teams from calling. The closer that Webb gets to free agency, under control through 2028, the Giants may be more likely to consider a deal. As soon as the World Series is over, the Cubs need to check ob Webb's status once again, hoping that Giants have changed their tune.
