The Chicago Cubs are a virtual lock to reach the playoffs, but as the end of the regular season nears, there are some important decisions the Cubs will face in the months ahead. There remains a chance that the Cubs may be in search of a new general manager if Carter Hawkins leaves for the Washington Nationals, and Kyle Tucker's free agency has been in the background of each move the team has made this season.
There is also a decision that needs to be made with Shota Imanaga's contract, but it would seem the result will be the Cubs picking up the 2028 option, and Imanaga essentially receiving a three-year extension worth $57MM.
In other words, Imanaga is not in his final days with the Cubs. The same can't be said for other players on the Cubs roster.
Kyle Tucker, RF
An acceptance seems to have crept in that the Cubs will be letting Kyle Tucker walk at the end of the season. It was a fear that many Cubs fans had when the team traded for Tucker last offseason, but as the end of the regular season approaches, it seems many are ready for that reality. It hasn't helped that there have been hints of tension between the Cubs and Tucker over his recent calf injury.
Justin Turner, 1B
After the first month of the season, Cubs fans were ready to end the experiment the Cubs were doing with Justin Turner serving as a platoon at first base with Michael Busch. Turner has bounced back from his early-season struggles, and has proved to be capable of handling the stick against left-handed pitchers. Still, turning 41 in November, this seems to be the end of the line for the veteran's MLB career.
Andrew Kittredge, RHP
Acquired at the MLB trade deadline, Andrew Kittredge has a $9MM club option for the 2026 season. With the Cubs already having an eye on the potential work stoppage after next season, they almost certainly will be turning down the option, allowing the veteran to become a free agent.
Colin Rea, RHP
Colin Rea has a $6MM club option, and in a season where Justin Steele has had Tommy John surgery, Shota Imanaga has been sidelined for a month, and Jameson Taillon has had multiple trips to the IL, the veteran pitcher has become an unsung hero to the pitching staff. This decision could go either way, but with a returning Steele, an ascending Cade Horton, and Javier Assad in the bullpen, the Cubs may not be in a rush to pick up Rea's option
