For better or worse, each offseason (or start to spring training) allows for Chicago Cubs fans to repeat some tropes when it comes to Jed Hoyer. After an offseason where the Cubs spent heavily on Alex Bregman and traded for Edward Cabrera, those tropes aren't as bothersome. In other words, when Hoyer takes a flyer on a player he has always loved, like Michael Conforto, even if it is far too late, there's very little reason to be upset about the move.
Conforto's deal with the Cubs was reported in the early hours of Monday morning, and recent reporting has confirmed the former All-Star is arriving at camp on a minor-league deal with a non-roster invite.
Conforto was also being chased by the Houston Astros, so there's a chance that the Cubs may have indicated that he has a strong chance of making the Opening Day roster.
4 Cubs who could be squeezed off the roster if Michael Conforto turns back the clock
2025 was a lost season for Conforto, but it's not like the competition for the final spot on the Cubs' bench is filled with talented options. The Cubs have always liked Conforto, and that may bode well for his chances to break camp with the team and squeeze other options off the roster.
Tyler Austin
Tyler Austin's swing profile during his time overseas would suggest that he should find some success with the Cubs this season. That being said, he's in camp on a split-contract and hasn't played in the majors since 2019. In the event he struggles during spring training play, Conforto may take his spot on the roster.
Kevin Alcantara
The Cubs are encouraged by Kevin Alcantara's attitude upon his arrival at spring training, but that may not change their desire to have him play regularly at the Triple-A level instead of wasting away on the major league bench during the 2026 season. A veteran like Conforto could help with this plan.
Dylan Carlson
Before the signing of Conforto, Dylan Carlson seemed to have a strong chance to make the Cubs' Opening Day roster. A switch-hitter capable of playing all three outfield spots, it made sense that he would have the leg up on the competition. That may not be the case if Conforto proves that his Dodgers run was a fluke.
Chas McCormick
Assuming Austin does break camp with the Cubs, the final spot on the bench could come down to Conforto, Carlson, and Chas McCormick. Of the three, McCormick feels like the least likely to make the team.
