With all the rumors swirling surrounding the Chicago Cubs signing free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, it is also being rumored that a Bregman signing will get the wheels spinning once again on a Nico Hoerner trade.
Hoerner being moved would mean that Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw will be the team's Opening Day second baseman.
If Hoerner were to be moved, here are three teams that would benefit most from a Nico Hoerner trade.
1. New York Yankees
The Cubs and Yankees have already made one trade this offseason and it would not be a surprise to see them make another.
The Yankees and Hoerner have been connected since early in the offseason, and he would instantly fill the Yankees' second base hole. As of now, FanGraphs has Jazz Chisholm moving back to his natural position and starting the season at second base.
Making a trade for Hoerner would allow New York the flexibility to move Chisholm back to third baseman where he played the entire second half of the 2024 season.
2. Seattle Mariners
Another team that has been linked to Hoerner since the beginning of the offseason, the Seattle Mariners, is in need of an upgrade at second base.
Utility man Dylan Moore is currently projected as the starting second baseman and if you know anything about baseball, you know that Hoerner would be a major upgrade at that position.
The Mariners struck out more than any team in baseball last season and one thing Hoerner doesn't do is strikeout. He could come in and instantly be a plus addition both offensively and defensively.
3. Boston Red Sox
There have been no rumors swirling around a Cubs-Red Sox trade, it just seems like an interesting destination.
David Hamilton is currently listed as the starting second baseman for a Red Sox team that has been active all offseason and would gladly take an all-star caliber player like Hoerner off the Cubs' hands if they are willing to move him.
It seems that a Hoerner trade is inevitable once the Cubs complete a Bregman deal. It will be intriguing to see if someone outside of these three teams makes an offer that the Cubs cannot refuse.
