After a rather disappointing series against the Minnesota Twins, the Chicago Cubs will head off to New York to match up with the reigning AL pennant-winning New York Yankees. It will be both team's final series prior to the All-Star break and for all the players on each side not involved in the All-Star Game, it will be a much-needed break.
There has been a plethora of solid players such as Aroldis Chapman, Starlin Castro, Alfonso Soriano and Anthony Rizzo, that have played for both sides in their careers. Along with those players, there are also a number of Hall of Famers that have played for both the Cubs and Yankees. Here are 3 of my personal favorites.
3 Hall of Fame players that played for the Cubs and Yankees
Lee Smith, RP
The Hall of Fame closer spent the first eight seasons of his career (1980-1987) with the Cubs before making several other stops during his time in the majors. He racked up 180 of his 478 career saves during his time in Chicago, the most he collected with any team in his career.
He made a brief stop in New York during the 1993 season, pitching just eight innings and collecting three saves for the Yankees. His eight innings with New York were the fewest he pitched for any team in his career.
To this day, Smith ranks third all-time in MLB history in saves with 478, trailing only fellow Cooperstown inductees Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman.
Goose Gossage, RP
Another Hall of Fame closer that made stops in both places, Gossage was about the oppsite of Smith.
He spent seven seasons of his career with the Yankees, collecting 151 of his 310 career saves in the process. That was his most at any stop, plenty ahead of the 83 he collected with the San Diego Padres.
Gossage actually came to Chicago the season after Smith departed and went to St. Louis. Gossage appeared in 46 games and collected 13 saves for the Cubs. His 4.33 ERA in Chicago was the highest mark he had for any of the nine teams he appeared for in his 23-year big-league career.

Burleigh Grimes, SP
Everyone remembers Hall of Famer Burleigh Grimes, don't they? That's okay, most people weren't around to see Grimes' Hall of Fame career play out.
He spent the 1932 season and part of the 1933 season with Chicago, compiling a record of 9-17 with a 4.35 ERA during his time with the Cubs. He stopped in for a cup of coffee with New York during the strike-shortened 1994 season, going 1-2 with 5.50 ERA in 10 appearances.
His career highlights definitely did not come in Chicago or New York but nonetheless, he still checksc the box as a Hall of Famer that appeared for both teams in his career.
