The Chicago Cubs are destined to make a big splash at the 2025 trade deadline, and these three prospects could be on the move given their recent performance.
1. OF Owen Caissie
Iowa Cubs outfielder Owen Caissie couldn't have picked a better time to heat up at the plate. Since June 1st, Caissie is leading the Iowa Cubs with 12 home runs and 22 RBI, bringing his season totals to 19 and 42, respectively. The left-handed slugger also owns a .961 OPS on the year, cementing himself as one of the best power hitters in the minor leagues.
As the team's No. 1 prospect, it's almost certain Caissie will be on the move this year. His stock is a high as it's ever been since he came to the organization four years ago, and at 23 years old, he's begging for a big-league callup. And if the Cubs didn't have two All-Stars in their outfield, Caissie probably would be on the major league team right now.
It will be tough to see him go, but Caissie is too valuable to hold onto any longer. The Cubs are in "win now" mode, and Caissie has the potential to headline a trade package for a controllable starting pitcher that the Cubs need right now. After the Cubs opened the 2025 draft by selecting two outfielders, it certainly feels like they are shoring up their outfield depth for Caissie's (and maybe Kevin Alcantara's) departure.
2. RHP Jaxon Wiggins
In his second season as a pro, Jaxon Wiggins has taken a major step forward in his development. After selecting him in the second round of the 2023 draft, Wiggins struggled at times in his first full season in 2024, but he made his way to the High-A South Bend Cubs.
But this year, the 23-year-old owns a 2.09 ERA in 13 appearances, with 74 strikeouts over 60.1 innings pitched. Wiggins is also limiting opposing hitters to a miniscule .156 batting average with an impressive WHIP of 0.99. These stats earned Wiggins a promotion to the Double-A Knoxville Smokies, where he has continued to dominate the competition.
Aside from Cade Horton and Brandon Birdsell, the latter of whom has been hurt all year, Wiggins is the highest-ranked pitching prospect in the Cubs' system, and he sits at No. 8 on their top 30 list. If the Cubs go after a big-league starting pitcher, it's a good bet that Wiggins will be included in the prospect package. Especially because he looks ready for the Triple-A level and will likely be vying for a big-league callup sometime next year if he can stay healthy.
3. IF Jefferson Rojas
Since last year, Jefferson Rojas has been on a steady climb on top prospects lists. Despite still playing at the High-A level, Rojas is 63rd on MLB's top 100 list and no. 3 on the Cubs' top 30. The Cubs signed the middle infielder as an international free agent in 2022, and this year, his power stroke is finally coming into play. Rojas has already set a career high in home runs (11) and walks (38).
Through his first 67 games this year, Rojas also has an impressive slash line of .278/.379/.492 with 44 RBIs, 13 doubles, and 70 hits.
His high-upside bat is complemented by solid defense at shortstop and good baserunning instincts. At 20 years old, Rojas has immense potential if he can continue to show signs of improvement. Teams will undoubtedly be interested in acquiring him since he will likely be on the cusp of the majors as soon as next year. If not, he has plenty of time to improve since he is so young.
