The Chicago Cubs have played some of their best baseball since they won the World Series in 2016, and it helps that they have a roster that comes close to being just as talented as that team. It's become clear that the Cubs are going to be looking for pitching at the deadline this summer, but what may not be clear is players who may soon be on their way out of Chicago.

It's hard to take issue with the position-player side of the roster. Craig Counsell has found the perfect balance between relying on his starting lineup and keeping veterans like Michael Conforto fresh and ready for the moment. Same with how he has split responsibilities for Moises Ballesteros and Matt Shaw, in terms of making sure each is seeing a favorable matchup when they are in the lineup.

That being said, as we get closer to the middle months of the season and the deadline comes into focus, there likely will be more shuffling across the Cubs' roster. Shuffling that already has a few players on the chopping block.

Nicky Lopez

Nicky Lopez has only had three plate appearances since rejoining the Cubs, but he does appear to be at the center of the chemistry of the Cubs roster. That being said, he's a veteran infielder who has been discarded by the Cubs multiple times over the past year. It feels inevitable that the same fate awaits him this season. Likely because Pedro Ramirez has reached the point where he has to be on the major league roster.

Javier Assad

Instead of turning to Javier Assad to fill Matthew Boyd's role in the starting rotation, the Cubs are relying on Ben Brown. Because he has minor-league options remaining, Assad has value for the Cubs and provides the organization with needed pitching depth. For no fault of his own, it feels like Assad will likely have a trip back to Iowa in the near future as the Cubs look to keep arms fresh in the bullpen.

Kevin Alcantara

No, Kevin Alcantara isn't with the big-league club, but it feels like he is on borrowed time with the organization. The Cubs didn't seem eager to have Alcantara break camp with the team this season, and while he could be an option to replace Ian Happ or Seiya Suzuki next season, it feels like he's going to be their biggest trade chip at the deadline.
