4 Cubs players who should be ditched: #1 – Jason Heyward

We’ve been talking about this for some time now – really since the back half of the 2021 season. Jason Heyward has always been overpaid (through no fault of his own), but once brought value to the Cubs. That’s sadly no longer the case and telling fans you’re focused on building a long-term winner while starting this guy every day is just adding insult to injury.

We saw the Brewers cut ties with struggling veteran Lorenzo Cain this week – and the Cubs need to follow suit with Heyward. He’s batting just .211/.286/.286 on the year and has a -0.8 bWAR. He’s lost a step defensively from his peak years and continuing to roster him just makes no sense.

Even against right-handers, the has an OPS south of .600. His strikeout rate, carried out over the course of a full year, would be a career-worst. It’s unfortunate things have come to this point, but there’s no way Chicago can continue to play Heyward given his showing the last year-plus.

These are just a handful of moves this team needs to make to prove it’s actually focusing on building something on the North Side. Combined with the trade deadline, it’s safe to say we’re going to see a drastically altered Cubs team come August.
