Cubs: 3 key early season series to have circled on your calendar
With Opening Day just a week away, it’s time to start circling those series of interest early in the year that might not decide a team’s fate, but will still be a good measuring stick regardless. For the Chicago Cubs, that means matchups with several likely postseason-bound clubs – but for our purposes here, I’ve narrowed it down to just three.
Of course, there’s the old saying: “It’s only April”, until you remember how many recent seasons the Cubs have spent trying to contend for a wild card berth, leaving fans wishing they had done better earlier in the year. Ahead, we take a look at three key matchups for the Cubs as they open up the 2022 season at Wrigley Field on Thursday, April 7.
Cubs: 3 key early season matchups – #3: Milwaukee Brewers @ Chicago Cubs
Milwaukee enters the 2022 season as the most formidable squad in the NL Central. Poised to make a deep playoff run again this year, the Brewers will, right out of the gate, be a true test for David Ross and his new-look ballclub.
Backed by a killer rotation of Brandon Woodruff, Freddy Peralta and reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, Milwaukee’s pitching staff from rotation to bullpen is one of the deeper bunches in all of baseball, period. Burnes finished the regular season with an incredible 2.43 ERA and 234 punchouts last season. As if that weren’t intimidating enough, his 1.63 FIP suggests he was actually the victim of some bad luck and that 2.43 mark is actually quite inflated.
Last season, Milwaukee finished the year 95-67. Knowing the challenge that Chicago faces right out of the gate, you have to hope to inflate the starters’ pitch counts early on and not let them settle in. Thankfully, at the very beginning of the year you may not see as long of starts from Brewers starters as they ramp up, but it’s still a tall task.
Devin Williams and Josh Hader are two of the best arms at the back of any bullpen and that group, as a whole, possesses a ton of different weapons. If Christian Yelich gets the back issues under control and returns to his former MVP form, watch out for the Brewers in 2022.
Cubs: 3 key early season matchups – #2: Tampa Bay Rays @ Chicago Cubs
Somehow, for years now, the Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the strongest clubs in all of baseball. Backed by a fantastic farm system, it’s fascinating when one of the smallest market teams can consistently put together such an incredible on-field product.
Although Tyler Glasnow, who has become sensational in his own right, will likely miss the entire 2022 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, the Rays still pack a punch – headlined by up-and-coming superstar Wander Franco.
Elsewhere, Austin Meadows and Brandon Lowe, fresh off of a career year, will play key roles. If Corey Kluber can put anything special together in the #2 spot of the Rays rotation, it will be no surprise to see Kevin Cash’s club making another deep postseason run this year.
Cubs: 3 key early season matchups – #3: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Chicago Cubs
A clear-cut World Series favorite, the Los Angeles Dodgers land at #1 on this list to close out the first month of the 2022 season. With the acquistions the Dodgers have made over the offseason, there is no team in the National League more poised to run roughshod through the Senior Circuit.
The Dodgers have made the NLCS in six different seasons since 2013, missing the postseason just one time during that span. While only winning it all the one time back in 2020, it’s blatantly obvious Los Angeles’ winning ways aren’t going away any time soon as they continue to add to an already stacked roster.
In the past eight months, the Dodgers have acquired two more superstars to go along with Mookie Betts in the form of Trea Turner at the trade deadline last season and first baseman Freddie Freeman this offseason. Losing Max Scherzer to the Mets, who are stacked in their own right is a tough blow, but LA and its seemingly endless resources continue to re-gather and re-strengthen every year.

This year, the Dodgers pack an extremely potent lineup, particularly against right-handed pitching. Seeing what the Cubs can do in any three of these series will be of interest to us all. Here’s to hoping a new-look rotation and a hungry lineup can cause some chaos in the first half.
