In what might be one of the most shocking moves of the offseason, former Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant is headed to the Colorado Rockies. The former National League MVP is signing a seven-year, $182 million deal, immediately making him the face of the franchise.
For some, myself included, this might come as a huge shock. While there have been rumors all offseason about the potential of KB joining the Rockies, I don’t think anyone actually saw it happening. Bryant is now getting an absolute payday where he becomes the key building block for this club.
I would say the general public is extremely confused by this move because many are wondering why a team like the Rockies would do this. We can’t forget: the Rockies gave up All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado last offseason and then let Trevor Story walk just to go out and get All-Star infielder. It’s a very weird situation with the Rockies but, whatever makes them happy I guess.
Bryant’s swing was built for Coors Field and you should expect a huge jump in his power numbers as soon as the season starts. It will be interesting to see if the Rockies use him similarly to how the Cubs and Giants did last season where he would practically play a new position every day.
The contract has a full no-trade clause as Bryant really has the control to play where he wants to for the next seven years. The Bryant family now gets to settle down in Denver where they will be expecting twin boys this summer to add to their family.
From the Cubs’ standpoint, I think the biggest thing this deal shows off is that the extensions the Cubs offered to the ‘core’ players the last couple years held up in the open market. Bryant got right around or less than what the Cubs offered him, and the same thing is to be said about Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo.

All Cubs fans should be extremely happy for Kris Bryant as he has finally gotten his much deserved pay day. The Bryant family is one of the great family’s in the sport, and they deserve all of this and more. Congrats to Kris Bryant on finding a new home and getting your long awaited cash!
