Former Cubs pitcher sentenced to 40-60 years in prison for heinous crime

Former Cubs, Yankees, Marlins and Brewers pitcher Sergio Mitre is headed to prison for 40-60 years after he was convicted of femicide in Mexico, stemming from a 2020 incident in which he raped and murdered his ex-girlfriend’s daughter.

Mitre was initially arrested in mid-2020 after the 22-month old infant died as a result of injuries sustained during the brutal assault. Now, he’s where he belongs: behind bars.

To call this abhorrent and appalling doesn’t even come close to hitting the mark. Mitre, who the Cubs drafted in the seventh round back in 2001 out of San Diego City College, won’t even be eligible for parole until he’s in his 80s – although it’s safe to say no one will shed a tear if he never sets foot outside that prison ever again.

Mitre pitched in parts of three seasons with Chicago, making his big league debut in 2003, compiling a 6.12 ERA during his time on the North Side. The Cubs traded him to Florida after the 2005 season along with Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto in the deal that brought speedy outfielder Juan Pierre to the Windy City.

The right-hander was a member of the 2009 World Series champion Yankees, but was never an impact presence in his career. He last pitched at the big league level in 2011 as a 30-year-old in a brief return to the Bronx.

According to the Daily News, in 2019, Mitre faced domestic assault charges, but paid a fine instead of serving any prison time. This incident involved a different partner.

Like I said, as far as my personal reaction and thoughts to the report – well, they can’t be published here. This isn’t about being a Cubs fan or even a baseball fan. It’s about being a human being. Hopefully, Mitre never sees the light of day again – and even that wouldn’t be enough in my mind.
