Chicago Cubs Potential Impact Pitching Prospects: #3 – RHP Caleb Kilian

You may have heard about Caleb Kilian when the Cubs acquired him in the Kris Bryant trade with San Francisco. He was also on the AFL championship-winning Mesa Solar Sox, where he was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player award after throwing an impressive six perfect innings and notching eight strikeouts.

Kilian, 24, was drafted by the Giants in the eighth round of the 2019 draft out of Texas Tech, where he pitched in the College World Series twice. Despite only pitching in 21 MiLB games in his career so far (mostly due to COVID-19 canceling the minor league season in 2020), he has advanced rapidly and is now ranked 14th on the MLB.com Cubs’ Top 30 Prospect List.

He has above-average velocity on his fastball and the fact that he doesn’t change his arm slots for his off-speed pitches allows for some serious deception. Kilian easily has the potential to slide into the Cubs’ rotation this upcoming season if he gets some time in Spring Training.
