Trust me Cubs fans – I get it. This has been an extremely frustrating start to the offseason. When the winter began, many of us hoped this was the year we finally went for it in free agency and tried to build a better squad for the 2022 campaign. Well, over the past couple days many free agents have come and gone to different teams, and the Cubs still have yet to make a meaningful move (excluding picking up Wade Miley via waivers).
It is particularly frustrating for the fans as before the offseason began, Cubs owner Tom Ricketts and president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer both came out and said the team was going to be aggressive this offseason and have plenty of money to spend. With the list of free agents rapidly starting to dwindle, the club is still yet to made a significant signing. In the video linked below, Hoyer implies that the Miley move was the first of many, specifically for the starting rotation.
Well Jed, we are still waiting.
So now you look at this Cubs team and you should begin to realize that the 2022 season rather than be a “retool” seems to be a full blown rebuild. Usually when a team is in a rebuilding year, that means top prospects are on the way to take over opportunities and build momentum for when it’s time for a team to begin to compete again. For the Cubs, that player is Brennen Davis.
As it stands right now, it looks like Davis will be the best new addition to this Cub team for 2022. Now will he make the team Opening Day? We don’t yet know; but there is no doubt Chicago’s top prospect will be in the cards for next season.
It is upsetting that a franchise as big as the Cubs can’t (or won’t) go out and spend money on notable free agents but don’t let that take away the fact that Davis is an absolute stud. The 25-year-old center fielder is the number 14 prospect in all of baseball and has blown through all levels of the minor leagues since the Cubs drafted him. In 2021, he played in all three levels of minor league baseball and hit .260 with 19 homers and 53 RBI.
Chicago Cubs: Brennen Davis has the potential to be a superstar
Some notable achievements this year include his participation in the Futures Game in Colorado this past summer, where he hit two home runs, leading him to the MVP award for that game. Not to mention he played only 15 games in Triple-A Iowa and hit four homers, immediately making an impact.
Davis should have everyone in Chicago excited. He is a true five-tool player who hits the ball to all parts of the field. He might just be the best Cub-drafted prospect since Kris Bryant way back when.
The one positive sign and moves that is currently going on with the Cubs is that they are slowly starting to replenish and build a solid farm system and that all starts with Davis. It would be nice to have a couple of big signings to help anchor this young team, but now it feels like the Cubs are still a few years away from actually wanting to contend. Hopefully, when Davis comes up, he makes a solid statement for himself and proves that he can be a star in the league.
Even though the front office has sat on its hands all offseason, it’s good to know at least some reinforcements are on the way. I can guarantee that Davis cannot wait to pounce on the opportunity of being the Cubs’ starting center fielder and steal the hearts of fans at the Friendly Confines. So, all in all, don’t be too disappointed. Brennen Davis will be here to stay when he finally makes his big league debut in 2022.
