Chicago Cubs: 3 free agents who would be a perfect fit – 1. Starling Marte

Topping off this list is someone we’ve previously discussed in Starling Marte. For several reasons, Marte would be a perfect fit at Wrigley. Not only for his solid defensive abilities but for his high contact bat, ability to get on pass and added speed on the basepaths. Marte is coming off his best full length season where he started with Miami and was traded to Oakland at the deadline. He slashed .308/.381/.456 while leading the league with 47 stolen bases.

As a former Pittsburgh Pirate, Marte is all too familiar with Wrigley Field and the NL Central. The two-time Gold Glove outfielder and former All-Star has a career .268/.321/.465 line at Wrigley across 278 plate appearances. A lot of which was against the likes of dominant Cubs pitching in the past such as Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester. For his career, Marte has slashed .289/.345/.451.

Adding Marte to the mix gives the Cubs two former Gold Glove defenders in the corners of the outfield, along with Jason Heyward, with the hope that Brennen Davis could eventually be the third in center field should he join the mix before long. Adding Marte’s bat also gives the Cubs three high contact hitters in Marte, Madrigal and Hoerner.

With three guys hitting nearly or above .300, it’s no question that the Cubs’ production at the plate would skyrocket. Adding in the ability of Marte’s top tier ability in the outfield, he needs to be extremely high on the Cubs wish list in terms of batters.
