Chicago Cubs: Reasons to remain optimistic – #2: More losses equals better draft

If all else fails, the Chicago Cubs are on a pretty fast track to secure a top 5 draft pick in 2022. So, at least they have that going for them. All kidding aside, seriously, it would actually be great if the Cubs can secure a top-five pick again. Looking back at previous top 5 picks the Cubs have had, they landed Kris Bryant in 2013 at number two and Kyle Schwarber in 2014 at number four overall.

Any other good names on that list in Cubs top 5 pick history? How about Mark Prior or Kerry Wood? The Cubs have landed great picks in the past when able to pick high in the draft. Having a top 5 pick secures you someone that leaps into your team’s top prospects rankings, immediately giving the farm system a huge shot in the arm.

Obviously, having that high of a draft pick means you did terrible the year before. Though, if you can embrace the inevitable, there are quite a few great prospects that will be declaring for the draft next season, should they continue on current trajectories. Definitely something to keep an eye on as this season winds down and we can start to look at just who the Cubs could pick to help make a huge splash on the roster before long.
