Chicago Cubs: Where does Whitney fall in line?
For right now, Whitney is just another arm in the system. Someone who doesn’t dazzle with his stuff but who has the potential to be something great for this organization. This season assuming Whitney begins at South Bend, it will be vital for him to get off to a strong start.
Whitney has improved his overall xFIP in each of his first two seasons and will look to continue to be stronger in that area. The strikeouts are there, and Whitney has subsequently limited the walks, giving way to the notion of how his control may finally be in check.
You won’t find Whitney on the Cubs’ top 30 overall prospect list, and that is just fine. He is a hard-working pitcher who is doing everything he can to earn his shot. If Whitney continues to grow in the organization, he could one day be a consistent middle-relief arm. Until then, he will be a fun prospect to keep tabs on in 2020 and beyond.
