Chicago Cubs: What is Suiter’s role?
Suiter is currently playing winter ball in the ABL in Australia. He has been the best Cubs prospect in the league, slashing .326/.382/.511 with four home runs and 16 RBI. Suiter has not pitched yet but does have a fastball that touched 93 mph back in high school.
There has been talk about the Cubs making Suiter a two-way player. The developmental coaching staff would like to see more of what he can bring on the mound, and Suiter is all for the idea. It would provide a suitable chance for the Cubs when rosters expand from 26 to 28.
It is likely the Cubs make sure Suiter begins the year either in Double-A Tennessee or Triple-A Iowa. Suiter would not be the 26th man the Cubs carry into the season. However, he is a likely candidate for one of the two spots in September. If the Cubs can hone in on Suiter to succeed as a two-way player, it could be the spark they need next fall.
