It is that time again in Major League Baseball as the First-Year Player draft is set to kick off this week in Secaucus, New Jersey. As the Chicago Cubs hold the 27th overall pick, we explore a few options of which way they could go.

Every June Major League Baseball holds the First-Year Amateur player draft, as many young hopefuls gun for their opportunity to continue their dream of one day making it to the Show. The First-Year player draft is one of intrigue and non-guarantees.

The likelihood even a first overall selection turns into a superstar is far from assured. While other drafts don’t guarantee anything either, there is something different about baseball. Players such as Matt Bush, Brien Taylor, and Bryan Bullington ended up being some of the worst first overall picks in MLB history.

Mark Appel, the once touted right-handed starting pitching prospect from Stanford, could have been on the Northside as easy as Kris Bryant could be starting at third base for the Houston Astros. For the Cubs this year, continuing to build a new powerhouse farm system begins on day one. The only question is, which way do they go?
