Chicago Cubs: Adbert Alzolay – Iowa Cubs

Checking in with another one of the Cubs’ top pitching prospects Adbert Alzolay, who recently worked his way back up to Triple-A Iowa. Last season Alzolay spent time with Iowa, pitching to a 4.76 ERA over 39 2/3 innings before suffering an arm injury, effectively shutting him down for the remainder of the year.

Working his way back this season, Alzolay began 2019 with Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach. He made just one start before returning to Iowa. In his first start with Iowa, Alzolay surrendered five earned runs across four innings, walking three and striking out six. His K% is currently sitting at 30 percent because of that. However, it is still an auspicious sign despite the tiny sample size.

Alzolay seems like a guy who is on the verge of cracking the major league roster. Assuming the 24-year-old can continue to improve and show consistency, it would not be a surprise to see him up with the major league team this season, possibly in a long-relief role after rosters expand. For Cubs fans, and Alzolay alike, the dream is alive for the future and what he can bring to this organization.
