Chicago Cubs: Miguel Amaya – C, Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Last August I dove into the future of Miguel Amaya in Chicago and why he is the next for the throne of the future. Don’t get me wrong. I love Willson Contreras and expect him to be a substantial member of the team for many years. However, it is nice to know a prospect like Amaya is making waves at such a young age.

Amaya began his 2019 campaign with Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach and is producing consistent numbers considering he is still just 20 years old. Through the first 36 games of his season, Amaya is slashing .218/.351/.411 with five home runs and 20 RBI.

The average itself is far from stellar, yet Amaya is currently posting a very good .360 wOBA and 123 wRC+. Another area of his game which has improved substantially is his ISO, which Amaya has improved on from a .147 last season to a .194 so far this year. The patience is also there for Amaya as he is working walks at a 14.6 percent rate, an increase of over four percent from a season ago.

Tennessee currently has three catchers on their roster in Ian Rice, P.J. Higgins and Erick Castillo. Don’t be surprised however if Amaya works his way to Double-A this year or, at the very least, starts next season with the Smokies. Amaya has steadily improved over the past few seasons, and the continuation of growth should only become better.
