With virtually every former top prospect playing in the big leagues or traded, the Chicago Cubs are in the midst of rebuilding their farm system while contending.

Over the last handful of years, president of baseball operations Theo Epstein has done an excellent job setting young Chicago Cubs for success. We’ve seen several of them turn into budding stars or even superstars right before our very eyes. As what seemingly felt like the entirety of the system jumping ship to the Show at the same time, Chicago was inescapably left with a barren wasteland of prospects across their Minor League ranks.

That has begun to change, however. While Major League Baseball is a sport that requires serious developmental time for their newest additions and draftees, the draft class from this past summer’s draft is one that feels special and could be on the verge as the next coup de grâce of Cubs baseball.

One prospect, in particular, Riley Thompson, is beginning to turn heads. In just his second professional season out of the University of Louisville, Thompson does not have many miles under his feet in professional baseball. That being said, he is beginning to show a special future could be on the horizon.
