Chicago Cubs: Marching onward and up
This past weekend the minor league season officially kicked off. Anticipation for Marquez’ first start was high among fans, and he certainly did not disappoint. On a cold, blustery night, Marquez went 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing a single hit with two walks and an impressive seven strikeouts.
He threw 59 pitches, 37 of which were strikes, good for a 62.7% strike percentage. Marquez was also able to induce a double play started by him and routinely hit 97 mph on the radar gun. Only 20 years old entering this season, Marquez does still have to work his way through the system and show the organization his improvements are concrete.
Currently, Kyle Hendricks is the youngest starter in the rotation at 29 years old. The remaining rotation has an average age of 33 years old. It means that sooner rather than later the team will begin to look towards their future options and those who could step into a rotational role. Marquez is a unique enough talent to be that next big that for Chicago and fans should be chomping at the bit for his major league debut, hopefully, sooner rather than later.
