Chicago Cubs: Lack of funds cost team dearly this offseason

But instead, Tom Ricketts said, “We don’t have any money.” This is absolutely ludicrous. They had $20 million to spend on 35-year-old Cole Hamels. It’s not like former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel is a free agent or anything.

The Ricketts’ family all has some ownership stake in the Cubs. Patriarch Joe Ricketts is worth $2.7 BILLION. Yes, billion with a “B.” Tom Ricketts is worth $900 million. Pete Ricketts is worth another $45-50 million. The money is there, but since the Ricketts brought Chicago a World Series, they don’t need to improve the team. How foolish to put anything into your investment, right?

Theo Epstein’s hands are tied, and he could only buy with what he was given with. In past offseasons, we’ve seen him go wild (when he’s allowed to do so). But is letting Theo handle all that money really a great idea?

There’s no question that Epstein has done wonders for this organization and will probably be in the Cubs’ Hall of Fame one day – maybe even the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Make no mistake, though, he deserves some blame. It’s safe to argue this Cubs’ team, which has been largely the same since 2016, has gotten progressively worse since.
