In a surprise move, the Chicago Cubs optioned Ian Happ to Triple-A Iowa. Less surprising was the DFA of Brian Duensing, who since his first year in Chicago has struggled ever since.

When Ian Happ broke onto the scene for the Chicago Cubs in 2017, it appeared they had another piece to build off. After a disappointing 2018, Happ was surprisingly–to fans and him–sent down to Triple-A to start the season. Happ is a talented player, but he does have some holes in his swing that he needs to fix. Eventually, he’ll find his way back to Chicago. But for now, things are going to be a little bit different for Happ.

On the same day, the Cubs’ designated for assignment Brian Duensing. Since his first year in Chicago, he’s struggled much of the time, often due to injuries. There are chances that he could clear waivers and choose to stay in Chicago. But without him, the only lefty guaranteed a spot in the bullpen is Mike Montgomery. The rest of the group is coming back from injury, inexperienced or other in regards to left-handers. Maybe you didn’t like Justin Wilson. But now, he’d be a nice arm to have in this pen in need of a left-handed specialist.

Our Logan Whaley has taken on ranking some of the best single-season performances by pitchers in Cubs’ history. But he’s done it in a little different way. Part 1 of the list will feature pitchers from earlier in Cubs history. And it scares me that 1992 was considered ‘earlier’ since it’s near 30 years ago. But, I digress. So the first half of our list is out, and be ready for the more ‘modern guys’ in Part 2 which will go live on Wednesday.
