Do the Chicago Cubs really not want to sign a backup catcher?

We’ve all heard that the Cubs ‘didn’t have the money to spend.’ We assumed that meant big money that would go towards Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. It also meant not signing a backup catcher to compete in camp. I like the team that the Cubs come into this season with. But this was a spot that I would have wanted to see someone brought in.

Contreras knows where his focus needs to be, working on his frame rate and his throws (sometimes the unnecessary ones) to be better behind the plate. But it was no secret that Contreras was behind the plate more than any other catcher in the league. He might be young, but the position is the most demanding in the game. Having that guy that can give him a day off is what this team needs. Mostly for the team, partly for Contreras and his health.

Spring Training games have only just begun. Players might be cut quickly so they can have the chance to catch on somewhere else. So there is still a chance the Cubs could add someone before camp ends. But it would likely need to be someone whose reputation precedes them. A young catcher with potential is great, but we need a true backup for Willy.
