Chicago Cubs: Looking at players in their final contract years
Chicago Cubs: There is only one position player set to be a UFA in 2020.
Ben Zobrist‘s four-year, $56 million deal is on its last season. The veteran utility man was signed before the 2016 campaign and will make $12.5 million in 2019. There have been rumors of him possibly being traded to free up some payroll, but for now, he is sticking around.
Zobrist in his Cub tenure so far has hit .270/.363/.422 in 414 games, was a 2016 NL All-Star and was named the 2016 World Series MVP. He has been worth every penny he has earned since joining the squad, but for many Zobrist fans, it may be sad to realize this is most likely his final season as a Cub.
He is 37 now and will be 38 in May, he will essentially be 39 during most of the 2020 season. Unless it is a one-year cheap deal and they love his leadership so much, seems doubtful the Cubs will re-sign him. If he wants to play after 2019 he will definitely find a job somewhere even if it is not the Cubs. Hopefully, he can do what he did last year and go out with a bang in Chicago in 2019.
