How will the recent extensions signed by players affect the Chicago Cubs young core as they approach their arbitration years? And could the Cubs get a chance at Harper or Machado in the future?
Free agency has been a tough one this winter. Players like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are still waiting on deals. And younger guys like Luis Severino and Aaron Nola signed extensions to take them through their arbitration years. Is this the start of what we’ll begin seeing in the near-future? Or when the CBA comes up, will it all change again? The way things are headed now, the players union and the MLB look to clash when that time comes.
In the end, it’s highly likely that Harper and Machado will sign long-term deals. Someone will eventually give in, right? But what if they didn’t, and each ended up inking a shorter but very lucrative contract? Could this give the Cubs another chance at these players in the near future? The chances are slim, but still possible.
For our Heroes of Wrigley series, we’ve looked back at some former Cubs players that have had some great years in Chicago. Some you likely knew, and a few you might not have. But in our first piece about a non-player, we couldn’t think of anybody more fitting than the long-time voice of the Cubs, Harry Caray. If anybody could be considered a Hero of Wrigley, he was it.
