Chicago Cubs: Still work to do
I believe the Cubs aren’t done yet, and with the addition of just one of these players, this offseason may just end up looking better than last year’s when it’s all said and done. This front office has a history of waiting until late in the game to add players. Could that once again be the plan this year?
The Cubs – with a healthy roster – can compete with any team in the National League Central. Even with the additions, the other teams have made (and they’ve made a lot), Chicago still boasts a core that rivals any team in baseball. But adding a few depth pieces never hurt anyone. And the Cubs would be smart to heed that advice.
People might be caught up in the supposed need to add someone like Bryce Harper or Manny Machado or the looming question of whether or not Kris Bryant can bounce back and get back to his MVP-level production from years past. Instead, though, they should be focused on what some key depth additions could mean – especially down the stretch – for Joe Maddon’s club.
There are still weeks of Spring Training games to go, and often players know they won’t make the team and are merely auditioning for a different opportunity. The offseason isn’t over until the first pitch of Opening Day.
