The Chicago Cubs haven’t done a whole lot this winter. But the season hasn’t started yet, so there’s still time. Is there a diamond in the rough out there?

As we near the end of a slow offseason, baseball fans have something to get excited about with the first Spring Training game in just 10 days. It’s also exciting for Chicago Cubs fans as the front office has made it known they plan to be checking in on the free agent market as Spring Training nears, in hopes to potentially add some nice pieces at a discount.

That last part is key – as it’s been the name of the game for the Cubs’ front office so far this offseason. The biggest move they made since the end of last season? Picking up the $20 million team option on left-hander Cole Hamels. Other than that expenditure, it’s been bargain bin shopping for Chicago, coming off a 95-win campaign.

This club is deep, sure, but adding to a bullpen with more questions than answers or shoring up some of the regulars, like, perhaps catcher Willson Contreras, makes a lot of sense. In short, the main pieces are in place, but those key backup guys can be the difference between a title and watching October baseball from home.

The good news for the Cubs is that there are still a ton of guys available and some solid players looking for a home. With this in mind, we wanted to talk about three potential free agents that would be a great final addition to this team.
