The plot in the NL Central is thickening as the Brewers continue to close in on the Chicago Cubs. How could the rest of the season play out into October?

Just a few days ago, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-1 and the Brewers lost to the Reds. That shrunk the Cubs’ magic number to clinch the division to eight with a 3.5 lead. Things seemed to be getting easier.

Fast forward to Saturday morning and the number is still at eight and the lead is down to 1 1/2 games, which certainly makes things more interesting. One thing seems certain, the Brewers are not giving in what so ever and they are going to do everything they can to try to win the division. Cubs are going to have to get back on track after two blowout losses in a row.

The conflicting feelings toward the team from Cubs fans is certainly odd. On one hand, it can be upsetting seeing how close the Brewers are to them at this point. Especially considering they had a chance to bury their division chances in the two series they recently played each other.

On the other hand, despite the Cubs’ struggles offensively, they still went 18-11 over those 30 days with no days off. They could have easily gone sub-.500 and seen the Brewers take over the Central. Regardless of all the “what-ifs”, the scenarios the Cubs are in right now are all that matters.

Chicago Cubs: Looking at how it can play out

Right now MLB.com has the Cubs at a 100 percent chance to play past the regular season, whether it be Wild Card or as a division winner. Absolute catastrophic events would have to take place for the Cubs’ season to end on September 30. It is really a matter of if they win the division or not.

More from Cubbies Crib

As stated in a previous article, it is really in best interest for the Cubs to make the postseason via division title. While the Brewers gained ground the past few days, the chances that the Cubs win the division are still high currently. MLB.com has their chances at 80.7 percent before Saturday night’s game.

Looking at it mathematically, if the Cubs can go 5-4 the rest of the way, the Brewers would need to lose two games or less. Heck, if they go 4-5 then four more Brewers losses would still equal a division title.

Is it possible for the Brewers to catch and pass the Cubs? Yes, it certainly is. Do not be surprised if the division title comes down to the final three games against the Cardinals. In the end the Cubs have to take matters into their own hands.

Winning 95 games should absolutely be enough to seal a title, unless the Brewers go on an unreal winning streak to finish the season. If that happens, then well…good for them. They earned it. One thing is for sure the Cubs cannot afford to fold here and win less than four games the rest of the season if they want a division title.

Chicago Cubs: Prepare for NL Central showdowns in October

Three of the five teams in a playoff position right now are NL Central teams: Cubs, Brewers and Cardinals. If the Cubs win the division with the best record in the NL, then they will welcome the winner of the Wild Card game in the NLDS. Right now, that would be the Brewers or Cardinals. If the Brewers won the division, then the Cubs would likely face the Cardinals in the Wild Card game.

Right now there are several scenarios in which the Cubs would not face an NL Central team to start an October run. First, if the Cubs win the division but the Atlanta Braves and/or Los Angeles Dodgers pass the them in record. If that were to happen then whoever would surpass the Cubs would face the Wild Card winners.

The second is if the Cubs lose the division lead, go in as a Wild Card team and the Colorado Rockies overtake the Cardinals. Then the Cubs and Rockies would battle for a spot in the NLDS.

Next. Season winding down as Cubs eye another postseason. dark

There is technically a scenario where the Cardinals win the division and the Brewers and Cubs would play in the Wild Card game, but that seems very unlikely. Buckle up Cubs fans, it is going to be a wild ride.
