Chicago Cubs News: Cardinals, Brewers moving; Cubs hopes dashed
The Central division seems to have gotten a little bit tighter. The Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals were the teams to beat–until the Milwaukee Brewers turned up the stove from a simmer to a boil.
We were going to start this Morning Marquee of by talking about the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. We’ll get to that, but it seems the Milwaukee Brewers have made it be known that they plan on competing for the division. The Brewers pulled a blockbuster deal, acquiring Christian Yelich from the Marlins for four prospects. Three of them were in the Brewers top 10, including Lewis Brinson.
But wait, there more! Then the Brewers went and signed a deal for Lorenzo Cain for an estimated five years/$80 million. While that seems high on the number of years for Cain, it’s clear that the Brewers are playing to win this season. Other moves might follow, including a possible trade for pitching.
Back to the Cardinals. Our Jake Misener took a peek at the two teams by position and found that the Cubs still had a leg up overall. Even with the addition of Marcell Ozuna, the Cardinals still fall behind the Cubs–but it’s really close. Now, with the Brewers making their own moves this winter, it seems as if this will be a competitive division. Even with the Reds in a rebuild and the Pirates doing somewhat of the same, it should be an exciting season.
