Another day, another quiet day on the Hot Stove. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs continue to search for pitching and figure out how to line up their club this year.
Someday, there will be a major free agent signing. I promise. Until then, we’ll keep breaking down every imaginable aspect of the Chicago Cubs and any semi-lukewarm rumblings from the Hot Stove.
Yesterday, free agent right-hander Jake Arrieta added another potential suitor in the Philadelphia Phillies. At first, it might not fit in your mind as a realistic landing spot. I know I was in that group when I initially saw the report. But, after breaking down what the Phillies have heading into 2018, I can’t say I’d be shocked if they get into the fray here in the last month of the offseason.
Arrieta, who turns 32 in March, garnered top-10 Cy Young finishes in three of the last four seasons. In 2017, he pitched to a 3.53 ERA in 30 outings, again coming up big for the Cubs come October.
As for the Cubs, a reunion is still feasible. But in the meantime, Joe Maddon has his hands full figuring out how to get his guys playing time. Chicago boasts one of the deepest outfields in all of baseball, especially with a leaner Kyle Schwarber and a Ben Zobrist looking to silence his critics in year three of his four-year deal.
