Chicago Cubs have become a hot commodity among free agents

When Tom Ricketts bought the Chicago Cubs, he was determined to change baseball’s perception of the organization. He would forever change not just the product on the field, but Wrigley Field itself.

Then, he brought in Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer to head up the baseball operations team. They rebuilt the organization from the ground-up. After adding veterans like Jon Lester, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist, the Cubs put it all together, winning the team’s first World Series in over a century.

Of course, we all know this.

But the important thing is that every single player testing the waters of free agency knows this as well. They know the Cubs aren’t a flash-in-the-pan. Chicago is coming off three-straight League Championship Series appearances and has a controllable core ready to dominate for years to come.

So while seeing the Cubs tied to Giancarlo Stanton is exciting, it’s not for reasons you probably initially thought of. A trade with the Marlins doesn’t make any sense for the long-term well-being of Chicago – but the fact that he – one of the best players in the game – wants to come to Wrigley only speaks to the reputation this team now owns.
