The Chicago Cubs win streak hit seven games with a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. The Cubs magic number is down to nine.
The Chicago Cubs’ Mike Montgomery was fantastic as they won in Joe Maddon‘s return to Tampa Bay. Montgomery took a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing a solo home run to Brad Miller. That would be the only hit he would allow, as the bullpen would close the door on the Rays, as well. Kyle Schwarber hit a solo home run and Javier Baez added a RBI double as the Cubs brought their magic number down to nine.
Be honest. You’ve doubted Schwarber from the start. He’s a DH, you’ve said. The Cubs need to deal him. Well, that’s why it’s a good thing that you aren’t the GM. Since the calendar has turned to September, Schwarber looks to be falling in line with the late-season hero he’s been before. It’s a good thing that the Cubs don’t have knee-jerk reactions to things like the fans do. WE’d be in trouble if they did.
After a rough start to the 2017 season, Kyle Hendricks has turned things around in the second half. He’s not having the dominant second half of last year, but he’s showing why the Cubs have believed in him so much. While only posting a 3-2 record in the second half, it’s the 2.42 ERA that’s been the most impressive. Hendricks will need to keep riding that high for the Cubs to carry this success into October.
