The Chicago Cubs once again took advantage of a young New York Mets bullpen, winning their second straight game with a 17-5 win. Willson Contreras had a baserunning gaffe, but he atoned for it with three RBI and picked off of a runner at second base.
Recently, we questioned how significant an impact that Willson Contreras could have in his return to the Chicago Cubs. Now granted, it is a struggling New York Mets club. But the team has scored 25 runs in his two games back, and the spark seems to have returned to the Cubs. Contreras drove in three runs, and Albert Almora drove in six as the Cubs had no problem dispatching of the Mets with a 17-5 win. The Cubs will look for the sweep on Friday as Jen-Ho Tseng makes his MLB debut.
Tseng will make his debut as he comes off his second Cubs MiLB Pitcher of the Year Award. He along with Victor Caratini was the award winners for the organizations top minor league players. Now they’ll each have the chance to help the Cubs push toward a third straight playoff appearance as they’re both on the roster. They’ll be honored with an on-field ceremony against the Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 15.
Jose Quintana came out of the gate and looked like just what the Cubs needed. Then, things took a turn for the worse. A few subpar outings, early home runs, high pitch counts and people felt the Cubs gave up too much for him. Well, things may be settling in for Quintana. It can be a learning curve coming to a new league, learning a new catcher. Now is the time to prove he was worth every bit of what the Cubs gave up.
