I’ve got nothing for you this morning. The Chicago Cubs were swept by the second place Brewers. The Bears lost their opener, too. It’s wasn’t a good weekend for Chicago sports fans.

On Friday night, it felt like a playoff game between the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers. The first regular season night game in the history of Wrigley Field. Let’s just be glad that it wasn’t a playoff game because the Cubs would be in some trouble. Kyle Hendricks pitched well again, but the offense was nowhere to be found. The Cubs managed just one run today–three in the series–as they saw a five game lead turn into a two game lead over the weekend. The Cubs are still in first, so don’t panic yet. But I’d be concerned about what we see from the offense against good pitching.

The Cubs were active at the trade deadline, filling several holes of “needs.” One of those was–and still is–the bullpen. Justin Wilson was the Tigers closer upon coming over, and the Cubs were excited with the possibility of what he could do for the bullpen. That hasn’t worked out as well as the Cubs had hoped as Wilson has been inconsistent on the mound. It’s clear he has swing and miss stuff, but he needs to throw strikes to be effective. Will the Cubs get the pitcher they hoped for? Or is this another Tommy Hunter situation?

The Cubs have had some strong pitchers in the setup man role over the last few years. But in 2017, they’re just trying to find some answers in the bullpen. Many of the usual suspects have had issues with consistency, and Joe Maddon can’t trust many in that role. But what about Brian Duensing? The lefty has been as good as they come, and the Cubs could use him to setup for Wade Davis. Could we see him in that role down the stretch run for the Cubs?
