The Cubs need to extend Avila this off-season

With Avila producing the way he currently is, there is only one real option for the Cubs this winter, they must re-sign Alex Avila. Avila, a cheap, veteran catcher that can offer assistance to younger back-stops on the roster, is too valuable to let walk out of the clubhouse.

When the Cubs targeted Avila along with Wilson, the idea was for Avila to replace the void left by Montero following his trade to the Blue Jays. Thus far, Avila is doing that and doing it well.

Ignoring Avila’s defensive shortcomings, the 30-year-old has always been a high OBP guy that can make up for his lack of defensive ability with his bat.

Currently, the Cubs do not have an experienced back-up catcher for 2018. In years past, the Cubs have had veteran back-ups to help out the younger guys (David Ross, Miguel Montero).

With a hole to fill in their roster and a guy to fill it currently with the team, re-signing Alex Avila makes all the sense in the world.
