Chicago Cubs News: Arrieta leaves game as Cubs blownout

PITTSBURGH, PA - SEPTEMBER 04: Jake Arrieta
PITTSBURGH, PA - SEPTEMBER 04: Jake Arrieta

It was one of the last things the Chicago Cubs needed to see. Jake Arrieta came up lame after a pitch, and would eventually leave the game as the Cubs lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0.

The Chicago Cubs lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0 on Monday, but that wasn’t the biggest concern. Cubs’ starter Jake Arrieta came up lame after a pitch, and it looked like it could be a hamstring issue. Arrieta insists it was “just a cramp”, leaving Cubs’ fans hoping they dodged a bullet. The rest of the game, however, did not go well. The Cubs were shutout as the Pirates rolled to a 12-0 blowout.

The Cubs had to make some room for the new players on the roster, so other teams snatched up what the Cubs had to give up. Jacob Hannemann and Seth Frankoff were each picked up off of waivers but the Seattle Mariners. The Pirates claimed Jack Leathersich. The moves were needed to make room for Mike Freeman, right-hander Dillon Maples and recalled Victor Caratini and Rob Zastryzny.

He won’t become a household name, but you should get to know Sunday’s hero Rene Rivera. While not normally known for his offense, his solid defense has made him a formidable backup. The Cubs had actually considered him before acquiring Alex Avila. So what does the new catcher bring to the table for the Cubs?
