It was a day off for the Chicago Cubs, but it came with some good news. First baseman Anthony Rizzo was named the NL Player of the Week for his efforts.
You hear it often. That if the Chicago Cubs get more out of Anthony Rizzo, he’s what makes them go. Well, Rizzo batted .429 last week, knocking in 13 runs and helped the Cubs to a split with the Reds and a sweep of the Blue Jays. This helped him to garner NL Player of the Week honors. Rizzo has collected a Player of the Week once before, and it also came in the month of August.
With September just a little over a week away, it’s about that time to look at who could be an intriguing call-up. The Cubs farm system doesn’t have what it used to, so there won’t be any Kyle Schwarber or Willson Contreras type stars to come out of this. But there are several arms that could get the chance to show what they’ve got over the next month of the season.
When the Cubs made the trade with the Tigers to get Alex Avila and Justin Wilson, they felt they were getting a quality arm that could possibly take over the closing duties next season if needed. Avila was just a rental that they knew they needed, but Wilson was the centerpiece. How strange baseball is, as the trade has worked out well, but not in the way the Cubs had expected.
