The Chicago Cubs took the rubber game of the series against the Milwaukee Brewers, increasing their lead in the Central to 2 1/2 games. Now, it appears they may be going for it again this year with another possible blockbuster trade.
The Chicago Cubs picked up Jose Quintana early in the trade season, and many felt that outside of a couple of “smaller” moves, they might be done. Well, Theo Epstein did it again. The Cubs need an arm in the bullpen and a veteran catcher. The Cubs may have gotten both in one deal. Reports are that the Cubs will get Justin Wilson and Alex Avila in exchange for Jeimer Candelario and Jimmy Paredes, with either cash or a PTBNL.
The Cubs’ John Lackey continued his impressive run, allowing just two runs in six innings of work. Victor Caratini hit his first home run to give the Cubs the lead, while Kris Bryant added some insurance late with a solo shot of his own. After being 5 1/2 back, the Cubs have made that up and more to take a 2 1/2 game lead as the trade deadline nears.
With arguably one of his most disappointing season and all the youth around him, what does this season hold for Ben Zobrist? While still capable of playing every day, he doesn’t seem to be as adept in the outfield as he once. His numbers are down, and one Cubbies Crib writer thinks that this could be the beginning of the end for the veteran utilityman.
