Chicago Cubs News: Nationals’ Scherzer dominates Cubs

WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 27: Jake Arrieta
WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 27: Jake Arrieta

It’s a back and forth pattern with the Chicago Cubs. After winning the opener, they struggled in the second game as the Nationals beat them 6-1.

The Chicago Cubs scored first, but it was the last time they scored as the Washington Nationals’ Max Scherzer was in control throughout the night. The Nationals then tacked on seven stolen bases on the combination of Jake Arrieta and Miguel Montero. Montero hasn’t thrown a runner out all year but seems to feel that’s as much Arrieta’s fault as it is his. The Cubs lost 6-1 to the East-leading Nationals.

Kyle Schwarber spoke for the first time since being demoted, and he wasn’t at all surprised about it. He’s aware of what he needs to do to improve and has shown the maturity in handling this with class. There’s been no timetable set for his return, but I can’t imagine it would be before the middle of August at the earliest that we would see him return t Chicago.

The Cubs’ Javier Baez continues to show why he’s so valuable to this team. His defensive plays alone on Monday night were enough to wow the crowd–Nationals and Cubs fans–but he’s swinging the bat better as well. With some of the injuries the Cubs have suffered on the infield, Baez is an important piece to help hold things together.
