The way things started, it didn’t look good for the Chicago Cubs and Jon Lester. But baseball’s that way. It can fool you. Lester took a shot early before shutting the Marlins down in the Cubs victory.
The Chicago Cubs once again allowed first-inning runs in a contest. But Jon Lester put up a shutdown performance after that as the Cubs came back and rolled to a 5-3 victory on Saturday. After allowing a three-run home run to J.T. Realmuto, Lester locked down the Marlins offense as the Cubs got three RBI from Javier Baez to propel them to the win. Mike Montgomery will take the mound for the Cubs as they look for the series win on Sunday.
Last deadline, the question was if the Cubs would deal Kyle Schwarber to the Yankees. I have no doubt the Yankees will inquire about him again seeing how he was just sent down to Iowa. However, the answer they find will be the same. The Cubs have invested in Schwarber, and they aren’t going back on it–at least this year.
Addison Russell seemed stuck in the mud out of the gate. Then came the rumors and allegations of his infidelity and abuse. I recently wrote that finding a place of solace on the diamond would be a tricky endeavor with all that’s going on in his life–but he’s done just that. With Russell having a fantastic June, his success is paramount to the Cubs.
